Gatineau police say the dog was in a fenced yard outside a mobile home on Sixth Avenue West, near Highway 50 and La Vérendrye Boulevard.

When the female letter carrier approached the property, police say the dog jumped over the fence and attacked her. She was taken to hospital for treatment of a bite on the arm, which police called “severe.”

A city bylaw officer took the dog to the SPCA, and the owner agreed to let it be euthanized. The animal was a mixed breed, and although Gatineau police don’t know of any previous occasion when it bit anyone, it was deemed to be dangerous.

The owner could face bylaw charges including failing to control the dog and not having a licence for it, as well as being responsible for the bite itself. The penalty for a first offence is $100.
