Outdoor, music festival season begins in earnest this week, with four options, beginning with the Glow Fair, a free, ten-block party on Bank Street from Slater to James streets.

Make a point of not missing the opening acts at the two, free, ’80s-inspired, day-glo dance shows, even if it means taking disco nap on site (there’s a yoga/glowfit block that might have some suitable nap spots); on Friday, delicious Montreal trio Caveboy start the party with songs that encourage dancing and snogging (think recent Tegan & Sarah through a dream filter, with bigger vocal range), followed by more dance tunes from Ottawa’s Fevers, then the acid house-informed synthpop of Young Galaxy, with headliner, Juno Award-winning hip-hop/electro team Keys N Krates.

Friday’s lineup is dance with a bit of edge, beginning with the trip-hop, dark post-punk of West Coast’s Gang Signs — a band I’ve been following closely since hearing them at Zaphod’s last year, then ending with some new, bubblegum, dance-pop from other Juno Award-winner Dragonette. June 17 and 18, Bank Street. glowfairfestival.ca

The Dragon Boat Festival starts at the other end of the week, and has become known for pulling in the bands of the moment, and those about to be of the moment: Thursday see relatively young, but already established noir alt-pop rockers July Talk, whose sophomore album is due out in September (their dynamic single Push + Pull has Peter Dreimanis growling about over-consumption and excess). Also on the ticket are intriguing duo The Muscadettes, blonde-haired, surfy-folksters who seem to be a summer of love/space age creation. Other nights include last summer’s favourites, Toronto rockers The Beaches and yaya-lite Alvvays, plus indie band Mother Mother. June 23, 6:30 p.m., Mooney’s Bay. Free. www.dragonboat.net

It should be noted that most of the shows of the first of the biggest festivals on this week, the vast, indie-focussed Ottawa Explosion Weekend, are all-ages. The five-day event — “Weekend is a state of mind, man” — featuring 35 different bands begins Thursday at Club SAW, one of seven venues hosting shows ranging from the pop-punk (Vacation, Towanda), to hardcore (Urochrome, Doxx and GOMS), with a vast and varied lineup from 12:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, inside and out of Club SAW.

Top picks at OXW include one-woman, post-punk band Sneaks (June 18, St Alban’s), Vulva Culture (June 18, Club SAW), the art-rock show Friday at St. Alban’s with Pith and Parenchymas, Phèdre, Boyhood, and pop-punk with rock flair at Pressed with Montreal’s Barrasso and The Dirty Nil (June 18). Other highlights include Jay Crocker’s experimental pop Joyfultalk, an arena-worthy show from festival favourite Nato Coles and the Blue Diamond Band on Thursday, and Peterborough’s garage-pop bands Faux Cults and Lonely Parade on Sunday. June 15 to 19. $10-$15, or $80/pass. ottawaexplosion.com

The TD Ottawa Jazz Festival, with over 100 concerts and nine stages and something for all tastes, starts with a bang with saxophonist Kamasi Washington. Even the jazz-phobic will enjoy this cross-over artist who has won accolades from his jazz peers for his sprawling work, The Epic, and gained popular notice playing with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp A Butterfly (and previously Snoop Dogg and Rafael Saadiq). His exciting show, and it will be big and energetic, is the first of the Fest’s Jazz Warriors series, showcasing the biggest names in modern jazz.

Other shows at JazzFest with wide appeal, and that are likely to sell out, include: The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson brings his Pet Sounds tour on July 3; Sarah McLachlan plays on June 25 (with Butterfly Boucher singing backup), popular local songwriter Jim Bryson plays June 30; big voiced Judith Hill on June 29; indigenous icon and folk/protest songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie on June 28; and the creaky, roots, smokey sounds of Ben Caplan on June 27. However, let it be known the festival has planned five mystery “encore” concerts from the festival’s top draws, to occur the day after their scheduled shows — though how these will be announced still remains unclear. There’s also a youth pass ($90) available this year, among other ticket and pass options. June 22 to July 3, ottawajazzfestival.com

Other options include three guy with guitars and down-home heartache, starting Thursday with Adam Baldwin, part of Matt May’s band and not to be confused with the actor, whose first full-length solo work, No Telling When, is out June 24.

The titular song was written about 1982, the year before Baldwin was born, touching on the inevitability of human existence and how little we change (it should be noted, the album was written during the lead up to the 2015 federal election, and was written about the “unity and division we felt as a country,” said Baldwin).

The songs are definitely informed from the Springsteen/Adams rock of the era, with country elements, some 80s sax touches and hammering keyboards (no synths here), aided by Baldwin’s rough-and-tumble voice, driving urgency and rockstar quality. These are anthems for the mythological, “working man.” July 16, with Autumns Cannon, 8 p.m., Mavericks. $12. www.mavericksbar.com

On the same night, Renfrew songwriter James Leclaire and the Cable 22’s (we all know what he’s referencing there) headline a night of hard-rocking country with Still Winter Hills and Whiskey Fields at House of Targ. Leclaire grew up listening to the classics of country, but spent some time as a young man playing hardcore punk, and both have fused in this latest band, adding grit to the backyard quality of his beat-driven, friendly party songs. June 16, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $8. www.houseoftarg.com

Kiefer Sutherland

Then, actor Kiefer Sutherland (Stand By Me, 24, A Few Good Men, Forsaken) is fronting his own band playing his own classic country songs, that were initially written with the idea another artist might pick them up. “Because I was acutely aware of the stigma of being an actor doing music,” he said at a press conference. “I didn’t want to be that guy.”

And yet; Sutherland says one of the great experiences has been sharing these autobiographical songs and stories with a crowd, and all “realizing there’s not much difference between us” (while recognizing his life has been charmed compared to most). The debut track off the upcoming album, Not Enough Whiskey, is slow-moving, straightforward country — maybe a little too straight forward as in the video he acts out the lyrics: pull the shades/lock the door/ drag your feet/ cross the floor. But getting past that, his emotive though admittedly not-skilled singing voice makes it appealling.

He’s also at a “comfortable” stage in life where he’s O.K. if people roll their eyes at him (he admits doing it to others), but would prefer if people enjoy the live shows, his favourite and scariest part of the endeavour: “But if they don’t, it’s not going to stop me.” June 20, 8 p.m., Mavericks. $25. mavericksbar.com
