About 60 people attended a consultation Wednesday on what should be in a new central library in Ottawa, according to library staff.

The four-hour session at city hall is one of two open houses this month that encourages residents to share ideas about how to plan and program the spaces inside a new municipal library.

Another open house will happen next Wednesday at Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington St., between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Display boards from the sessions are expected to rotate around some library branches this summer.

The Ottawa Public Library is working with the federal Library and Archives to see if they should combine their efforts to build a super library. A standalone municipal library is still an option for the OPL.

The OPL wants a new facility in the downtown area between the Trillium Line and King Edward Avenue. There’s a strong preference for the facility to be near a future LRT station.

The library hasn’t determined where exactly it should establish a new central facility, but it’s getting closer to figuring out how to decide which properties are best. Library trustees are scheduled to consider a report at their next meeting in July that will recommend site-selection criteria.

In December, trustees will see a recommended course of action for establishing a new central library, including the funding requirements and public-private partnerships.

The open houses this month will inform the library design, which will be subject of consultations in 2017.
