Environment Canada issued a heat warning Saturday for what it’s calling “the most significant heat episode of the year” in the National Capital Region.

The good news is that it’s great weather to enjoy the first weekend of beach season and the astonishing variety of festivals running around town over the next few days — although it might be a tad sweltering Saturday and Sunday, with Environment Canada forecasting sunny highs of 31 C and 33 C, respectively. The dreaded humidex will make it feel more like 33 C Saturday and 38 C Sunday.

Temperatures won’t dip down much at night, either, with lows expected around 18 or 21 degrees both Saturday and Sunday nights. Lucky for some, the weather agency says temperatures are expected to cool Monday as a cold front will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms.

A heat alert was also issued Saturday by the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Tips to stay cool are available at ottawa.ca.

Beaches

Ottawa’s four beaches, Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Petrie Island and Westboro, open Saturday and will remain open until Sunday, August 28 from noon to 7 p.m.

Beach goers will get an extra week of swimming at all four beaches this year thanks to the city’s decision to provide an additional week of lifeguard supervision.

Water quality at Ottawa’s public beaches is monitored daily by Ottawa’s Public Health. Water quality results are available at ottawa.ca, on Twitter @ottawahealth or by phone at 613-580-2424 ext. 13219.

The city says if high levels of bacteria are found at the beaches a no-swim advisory will be issued.

Meanwhile, all City of Ottawa splash pads are open and will continue to operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m each day until September.

Wading pools will open between June 24 and July 4; their availability will be location dependent, so check before you wade.
