Firefighters tackled a dramatic fire in Kanata afternoon after several callers reported billowing black smoke and shooting flames.

The blaze started just before noon at 1841 Campeau Dr., in a row of attached homes in a residential neighbourhood near the Mlacak Community Centre and March Tennis Club. Firefighters quickly upgraded it to a two-alarm event while they were en route,

Callers initially told emergency services as many as 12 rowhomes might be involved. Similar rowhomes were caught up in a destructive fire on Saturday in Orléans, leaving 20 people displaced.

However, firefighters were able to get the blaze under control by about 12:20 p.m., despite working under an oppressive heat advisory.

Paramedic services are regularly on hand to monitor firefighters’ conditions, but do so more often under such temperatures as that forecast Sunday. Environment Canada had predicted a high of 38 C, including humidex.

“With weather like today, it could easy have been a weekend of water rescues,” said Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal. “But instead we’ve been busy with fires. There’s no way of predicting a pattern.”

She added their investigators did not see any correlation between either of the fires.

No one was reported injured in the Campeau Drive blaze. Firefighters were still trying to determine how many of the rowhomes were affected in the fire, but several residents were receiving support from victims services in finding another place to stay.

More to come.
