Renowned Ottawa poet William Hawkins died Monday at the age of 76 after a “short stretch” in the hospital, Chaudiere Books announced on its blog.
“He was our favourite author, and we were thrilled to be able to produce his last title, The Collected Poems of William Hawkins, edited by Cameron Anstee, in 2015,” the literary publisher wrote in a blog post.
The publisher said it would release more details as they become available but a tribute event will likely be held.
Hawkins was an award-winning poet and popular Ottawa musician throughout the 1960s.
He ended up in rehab in Toronto in the 1970s for various addictions and kept a low profile until 2005 when an anthology of his poetry was published.
He drove a taxi in Ottawa for several decades before his popularity spiked again in 2008 when an album was released that paid tribute to his music.
