What a Syrian refugee and mother of three misses most about celebrating Eid in her home country is her extended family and friends gathering together to mark the end of Ramadan.

Samar Hason, who celebrated Eid on Wednesday with her three children at the EY Centre in Ottawa, fled Damascus, Syria, for a Lebanese refugee camp two years ago before moving to Canada in January.

“It was the time the family got together,” Hason said of Eid in Syria, speaking through a translator. “It was all about the family.”

Hason says she’s happy to be welcomed in Canada to live in a peaceful country that understands the difficulties she faced in Syria and Lebanon.

Her family is settling into their new life in Kanata while they learn English and the children go to school, which they couldn’t do in Syria. The two eldest boys — now 20 and 16 — had to work back home to support the family after their father was killed in the war.

Hason was one of thousands of people to join together Wednesday for Eid celebrations, as well as the Muslim Summer Festival, which showcased food and culture from different countries, as well as games, bouncy castles, a reptile show, train ride, pony rides and a bizarre.

Amy Awad, head of the Ottawa chapter of the Muslim Association of Canada, said they decided to combine Eid with the festival this year since they are usually held so close together.

Awad said she anticipated roughly 15,000 people would go to the celebration and festival throughout the day with the largest concentration attending the morning prayer. Last year, almost 10,000 people attended the Eid festival, she said.

“The big attraction is to be able to celebrate Eid with people in the community,”Awad said. “The fact that so many people come here is why they can come to see all the people they know.”
