Forty child care workers at three YMCA-YWCA daycare centres went on strike Tuesday morning as parents were told to keep their children home, at least for now.
Talks with a conciliator were continuing Tuesday, but union president Athina Basiliadis said the two sides are still far apart.
Local 2204 of CUPE is in a complicated position. Its 300 members all work in Eastern Ontario daycares, but the 40 who are on strike joined the union recently and their contract has lower pay — $8,000 to $12,000 a year, Basiliadis said — with no pension.
“They have their own separate contract. They are new to our local — I believe they’ve been in for three years — so we are slowly starting to make progress with respect to their wages and benefits,” she said.
“I work at another centre within the local and we make substantially more as an hourly wage as well as having way better pension and benefits.”
The union wants to bring the 40 strikers in line with the rest of the local’s members. Currently they earn between $15 and $18 an hour.
The three daycares shut down by the strike are at the Taggart Family Y on Argyle Avenue in Centretown, and the Ruddy Family Y and Avalon Public School, both in Orléans. They serve infants, preschoolers, and some school-age children after school hours.
The Y’s summer camps aren’t affected by the strike, as they have seasonal staff who are not in the union.
The YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region says it will re-open all three centres Wednesday with replacement staff. It has also locked out staff who are striking. It promises to keep the centres operating with “high quality, dependable care.”
The three centres together have 229 children.
More to come.
