A mother and her adult son were found sitting on the roof of their home in an effort to escape heavy smoke caused by a fire, said Ottawa firefighters.
The fire began in a front apartment in a multi-unit complex at 3009 Jockvale Rd. at about 1:15 a.m.
Firefighters used a ladder to bring the mother and son to the ground safely.
Emergency crews also located and rescued the family’s pet cat.
The fire was quickly brought under control by about 1:40 a.m., with damage limited to the exterior of the building.
No injuries were reported to the family nor their cat, who were not able to return to their apartment and were receiving support from Victims Services.
An investigator was to asses the cause of the fire. Damages had not yet been estimated.
