Ex-privy council clerk Charette heads list of Canada's new ambassadors, high commissioners

Janice Charette will become Canada’s new high commissioner to Great Britain and Northern Ireland as part of a major reshuffling of the ambassadors and high commissioners who are the face of Canada around the world.

In all, 26 people are taking over top diplomatic posts, as the announcement from Foreign Minister Stéphane Dion says the government is aiming for more diversity and more women among its diplomats.

Charette replaces Gordon Campbell, is perhaps the most high-profile newcomer. She is a former Clerk of the Privy Council.

Other changes include:

• Deborah Lyons becomes ambassador to the State of Israel. She replaces Vivian Bercovici, considered controversial for her vocally pro-Israel stance.

• Donald Bobiash will become ambassador to the Republic of Colombia.

• Ian Burney will be the new ambassador to Japan.

• Perry Calderwood will become high commissioner to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

• Heather Cameron will become high commissioner to the Republic of Ghana.

• Antoine Chevrier becomes high commissioner to the Republic of Mozambique.

• Chris Cooter becomes ambassador to the Republic of Turkey.

• Jennifer Daubeny becomes consul general in Bangalore (Republic of India).

• Lise Filiatrault becomes ambassador to the Republic of Senegal.

• Emi Furuya becomes ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark.

• Carla Hogan Rufelds becomes high commissioner to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

• Masud Husain becomes ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

• Ping Kitnikone becomes ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

• Marie Legault becomes high commissioner to Barbados.

• Matthew Levin becomes ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.

• Peter MacDougall becomes ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Mr. MacDougall replaces Bruno Saccomani.

• Ian Myles becomes high commissioner to the United Republic of Tanzania. Mr. Myles replaces Alexandre Lévêque.

• Jeff Nankivell becomes consul general in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (People’s Republic of China).

• Olivier Nicoloff becomes ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium. Mr. Nicoloff replaces Denis Robert.

• Patrick Parisot becomes ambassador to the Republic of Cuba.

• Donica Pottie becomes ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand.

• Isabelle Poupart becomes ambassador to Hungary.

• Barbara Richardson becomes ambassador to the Czech Republic.

• Ulric Shannon becomes consul general in Istanbul (Republic of Turkey).

• Phyllis Yaffe becomes consul general in New York.
