Is there such a thing as the doldrums of summer? ‘Cause we’re still ready to rock out.
Enter Australia’s groovesome, genre-bending, earnest party band Cat Empire who are making their (hopefully) yearly trip to Algonquin College. Last year, they managed to exhaust even that young crowd by churning out eclectic dance tune after dance tune — albeit, not the sort found at the typical club. Their new album was described by one reviewer as Tame Impala crossed with Beirut (who, coincidentally, is barely out of the door of this venue); it’s not a bad way to describe all their songs.
This album is a carnival, held in a magical place where reggae, Latin rhythms, British punk, classic soul and Asian chords exist harmoniously — and everyone is invited. July 28, 8 p.m., Algonquin Commons Theatre. $35-$40. spectrasonic.com
Also Thursday, there are two stand-out shows at Chamberfest: gypsy-souled big Lemon Bucket Orkestra play a child-geared, free show at 2 p.m. at City Hall, and then divide themselves up into pocket groups as the ‘Lemon Bucket Rodeo’ for some late-night, klezmer-punk shenanigans. July 28, 10 p.m., Nouvelle Scene. $30. www.chamberfest.com
Sticking with that festival, the scandinavian lads who wowed us with their hipster beards and farm-focussed folk last year are back. The Danish String Quartet blew the minds of non-classical fans when they played the entirety of their album Wood Works, a take on Nordic folk songs, at a second show. This year, they have only one show and will be playing pieces by the likes of Mendelssohn and Beethoven — but also some folk, we’re told. Aug. 1., 7 p.m., Dominion-Chalmers United Church. $35. www.chamberfest.com
For something more on the raw, gritty rock edge, see local band Onionface, who are about to release their first full-length album. They headline a show with psychedelic elements alongside Brain Flower, Cold Chord and Mudpuppies. July 28, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $6 cover. houseoftarg.com
White Cowbell Oklahoma (from Toronto) also offer rock, but strained through some swampy, dirty country — and expect stage antics to go along with it. They’ve got two new singles to preview at the show before they’re released, along with a brand new drummer and the return of Chainsaw Charlie from a rather dodgy international situation, if the band is to be believed. They’re also hoping some burlesque dancers will join them on stage — wishful thinking? July 20, with In Heat, Hot Snake Handlers, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $7 before 10 p.m. houseoftarg.com
Indie folk meets bluegrass band Union Duke has two shows this week: one at the Black Sheep Inn and a free one in banjo-playing Jim McDonald’s parent’s barn in Apple Hill, North Glengarry. (He insists everyone is welcome to come and camp out in their fields; we hope his parents agree.) The band have a new album, Golden Days, out Aug. 5 but it will be available at the show. It’s been described as a collection of songs to bring back fond memories with friends, around the campfire — but there’s some sweet sorrow too, evidenced in the song, Got You On My Mind. July 31, barn, 18960 Munroe’s Mills Road, Apple Hill. Free; July 29, 8:30 p.m., Black Sheep Inn. $10. theblacksheepinn.com
The offspring of the musical Leahy Family are spreading their wings, with 13-year accordionist Xavier headlining his first show at The Black Sheep Inn — specifically picked by the family for its welcoming atmosphere. He will be continuing the French and Celtic traditional music theme, but not alone: 22-year-old cousin and singer-songwriter Emily Flack will be by his side. Plus, we’re told dad, drummer Francis, and other Leahy member, Erin, will be playing backup. They’d also not be surprised if friendly neighbourhood musicians rocked up and sat in. July 30, 8:30 p.m., The Black Sheep Inn. $12 in advance. theblacksheepinn.com
Ramping up the screaming vocals and guitars, Brazilian all-woman thrash metal band Nervosa are in our country just as our athletes are leaving for the Olympics in theirs. The band rose to fame on YouTube with their first video in 2012, putting out their first album in 2014, and released their second, Agony, remixed by thrash master Andy Classen, in June. There’s still some novelty to bands with this much estrogen in the genre; thankfully, they play some powerful, tight songs, and have definitely found their sound on this last album. Aug. 3, with Mortor, Venator, Exo-Vedate, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $15 in advance. www.chordproductions.com
And now for some dream-y shows for cheap ticket prices, that are worth more:
Montreal band Sweat are an intriguing entity: they’re young (see:vocals) and have only been playing together for nine months, but sound as if they’ve spent decades perfecting their groove together. The sounds is dream-surf meets late 70s soft rock as a base, with some other nuances — from slap-guitar to jazz rhythms. Their intoxicating seven-song EP is fantastic, as I found out, for a backyard party. This show is a steal at $5.
(Oh, and the band intends to eat breakfast while playing their first gig here. Pancakes will probably be involved.) July 29, 9 p.m., Avant-Garde Bar. $5/PWYC.
Sackville’s Julie Doiron is back at Bar Robo on the second stop of her solo, cross-Canada tour (she played with her band Weird lines last week). This is an all-ages show, in support of new songs we hope; Doiron has been busy, but not released a solo album since 2012. It will be good to have this magnetic indie-folk singer-songwriter (and storyteller) out front again. Aug. 3, with Adrian Teacher and The Subs, Construction and Destruction, 8 p.m., Bar Robo. $7.
There’s a great lo-fi show at Gabba Hey, with Philadelphia’s Alex G. (Sandy) headlining a tour with Grimes’ dream-pop, almost-ghostly protegé Nicole Dollanganger, before heading to Osheaga. July 30, with Herons Wake, 8 p.m., Gabba Hey. $15.
