The city of Gatineau has issued a call for tenders for “temporary” security cameras for two remaining wooden footbridges over the Rivière Blanche pending a final decision on protecting the area following a fire that destroyed the Brabant-Philippe Bridge covered bridge in June.

Gatineau spokesperson Yves Melanson said a final decision on permanently protecting Rolland-Huet and Des Bénévoles bridges, as well as the fate of the Brabant-Philippe Bridge bridge, will be made sometime in the fall.

Also in the meantime, the city approved the expenditure of $2,100 a week for security guards to watch the bridges.

Gatineau Mayor Maxim Pedneaud-Jobin had lashed out at the “human stupidity” behind a fire June 21 that destroyed a red covered footbridge in the city’s east end.

It was the second time the bridge had been torched in a week, although the first blaze was not as serious.

Preliminary estimates set the damages at more than $1 million.

The popular bridge, with bright red sides, white trim and a high metal roof, had a troubled history.

It was built by a local volunteer group in 2007, but burned completely in 2011, and reopened last year.
