Former Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak is resigning as MPP after 21 years in the Ontario legislature.
In a news release Tuesday, Hudak said he will formally step down on Sept. 16, and will then become CEO of the Ontario Real Estate Association.
The Niagara West – Glanbrook MPP was just 27 years old when he was first elected in 1995. He served in three Cabinet positions in the Ontario PC governments led by Mike Harris and Ernie Eves, respectively, until the Liberals won the 2003 provincial election.
In 2009, he became leader of the Ontario PCs, defeating Christine Elliott and Frank Klees in the leadership race.
Hudak led the PCs through two provincial elections, taking the party in a staunch fiscally-conservative direction. In 2011, the Liberals won a slim minority government under Premier Dalton McGuinty, and in 2014 the Liberals won a majority mandate under Premier Kathleen Wynne.
The 2014 election was a devastating loss for the PCs, with many members angry over the campaign promise to slash 100,000 public sector jobs. Hudak announced his resignation as leader on June 12, 2014, the night of the election loss.
Hudak remained in the PC caucus after Patrick Brown won the subsequent leadership race in May 2015. He took up the sharing economy as his cause, putting forward private member’s bills to legalize ride-sharing across the province and set up a regulatory regime for other types of sharing economy services (the bills are still waiting to be heard in committee).
The Ontario Real Estate Association is an influential lobby group in provincial politics, with 65,000 members across the province and 40 local associations.
Hudak said his last event as MPP will be to thank local residents at the Annual Chicken and Ribs Community BBQ in his riding on Sept. 15.
More to come.
