Emergency crews were required to extract a pregnant woman from a vehicle after a collision on Prince of Wales Drive at around 11 a.m. on Friday.

According to Ottawa Fire Services, residents reported a collision between a van and compact car on the roadway. Subsequent calls reported a person was stuck in the car and specialized equipment was necessary to cut them free.

Firefighters arrived and found a 29-year-old pregnant woman trapped inside the vehicle. She was riding alone when the crash occurred. Emergency crews immediately stabilized the vehicle to stop it from moving, then worked on the woman trapped inside.

When it was clear the woman’s injuries had been sufficiently treated, they extricated her by cutting through the driver’s door.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to hospital with injuries to her arms and legs. She was in stable condition.

A cause for the crash has not yet been determined. Police are still investigating.
