The speculation was wrong: The Green Party won’t be needing a new leader, at least for now.

Elizabeth May held a news conference Monday morning to announce she’d be staying on as leader.

She had been musing about stepping down since earlier in August when party members voted to endorse the Israel Boycott Divest Sanctions movement, which she called a “heart-breaking” decision. She also said the process of that decision went against party practices.

She told the media that many in her party had convinced her to stay in the position. “It appears I am much-loved,” she joked.

May has been Green Party leader since 2006, and became the party’s first elected MP in 2011. But she hasn’t been able to expand the party’s foothold in Parliament, and the Green vote share has decreased in each of the last two elections.

Here’s a roundup of the immediate reaction. More to come.

Scooped by her own press release! @glen_mcgregor Unsurprisingly, I was wrong. May is staying. pic.twitter.com/gp2d0OZcyE

Apparently, May only made her decision to stay last night. She was fine with either course of action.

So, May seems to think the way to avoid future BDS motion-like unpleasantnesses is to make the policy process more complicated.

so Elizabeth May will stay on as Green party leader…
what… what was the point of this presser?

AND Green Party policy-making procedure! @Justin_Ling May tricked us into a press conference about electoral reform.

And with that, I am embarrassed I ever ran as a @CanadianGreens candidate, @ElizabethMay. Way to stand up for your principles.

Again and again @ElizabethMay shows her class. There is a reason she is voted Parliamentarian of the year. #ERRE is that important to #CAN
