Peter Mansbridge — the veteran CBC News anchor whose deep, authoritative voice has been informing Canadians of the day's top stories, broadcasting into their living rooms each night for decades — is retiring as anchor of The National.

Mansbridge, 68, has announced that he plans to step down from the helm of CBC's flagship show next summer, after anchoring special Canada Day coverage on July 1, when the country will mark its 150th birthday.

"It's been an amazing time to report our history, but I've decided that this year will be my last one," Mansbridge told viewers Monday night.

"As someone who believes strongly in public broadcasting, leaving the CBC's flagship will not be easy. But what's important is that The National of the future will continue to reflect our world, our country and our people."

Long over due. Short-sighted, narrow-minded. Hope he gets to see the world finally and understands how wrong he has been.

同意,对世界的认识基本还停留在冷战时代 ...

Peter Mansbridge attended Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, but dropped out before graduating. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1966 and 1967.

Mansbridge worked as a ticket agent for Transair at Churchill Airport in Churchill, Manitoba. In 1968, Mansbridge was discovered by Gaston Charpentier, a station manager for the local Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio station CHFC, when he heard Mansbridge making a flight announcement. Charpentier hired the 19-year-old Mansbridge as the host of CHFC's late night music program. In 1971, Mansbridge moved to Winnipeg to continue as a reporter for the CBW radio station and in the next year, he joined CBWT-TV as a reporter.

In 1975, Mansbridge became a reporter in Saskatchewan for the CBC's flagship evening news program The National. In 1976, he relocated to Ottawa to become parliamentary correspondent. Following a decade of political coverage, Mansbridge had become a substitute anchor for Knowlton Nash and in 1988, CBS offered him a job as a co-anchor for a morning show. To keep Mansbridge in Canada, Nash retired from his anchoring duties at the CBC.

His "the National" has been merely the third most watched news program in Canada and, as the rumor goes, he has been paid by overall a million per year, well, from taxpayers' pockets.

俺已经好长时间不看电视了!不知道他现在长什么样了?
