The federal government will spend more than $200,000 on memorable New Year’s Eve fireworks displays in Ottawa to usher in Canada’s sesquicentennial.

According to a contract award published Tuesday, Concept Fiatlux Inc., a pyrotechnics company based in Montreal, will be paid $213,570 to present two fireworks displays in downtown Ottawa on Dec. 31.

That’s more than double what the government spent for this year’s Canada Day fireworks display in the capital, which cost $88,727.

The biggest display, lasting 20 minutes or more, will take place at 8:17 p.m. as part of a Canada 150 kickoff event on Parliament Hill.

Fireworks will be launched from Nepean Point and the recreational path behind Parliament Hill. Other pyrotechnics will be ignited from the roof of Parliament’s Centre Block and along the Alexandra Bridge, where a stunning waterfall effect will be created.

The second New Year’s Eve fireworks display will be shorter and more traditional — a five-minute display launched from Nepean Point.
