An OC Transpo bus displaying a ‘Just Married’ sign caught the attention of public transit users, jolting them out of their usual back-to-work, back-to-school commute on Monday morning.

“A ‘Just Married’ sign?,'” said a friendly but equally surprised OC Transpo spokeswoman who answered the media line.

“Were congratulations in order, had the sign been hacked or was it an employee gone rogue,” the Citizen wanted to know.

As it turns out, it was none of the above.

“No, the bus operator was not married this weekend,” said Pat Scrimgeour, an assistant general manager at Transpo

Upon finishing the morning route, the bus driver pulled into the Tunney’s Pasture station and turned off the standard sign to show that the bus was no longer in service.

While most buses that are not in service will display a sign that says ‘On-track 2018’ — a nod to the progress being made on the construction of the light rail transit line — drivers do have other options.

“Operators do on occasion put up a sign instead of the standard pre-programmed one when off-service in order to elicit a smile from our customers, such as ‘Have a nice day,’ ‘Go Sens Go,’ or as in this case, ‘Just Married,’ Scrimgeour said in a email.

Monday’s sighting of the ‘Just Married’ sign was just one of many over the years, eliciting a range of emotions from commuters who were pleasantly surprised to those who were slightly annoyed by it:

Destination on bus, barely legible, is "just married.". The fun side of OC Transpo! #ottawa pic.twitter.com/2XLPgKzglK

An @OC_Transpo bus just drove by me, empty, with the destination sign "JUST MARRIED". An OC Transpo wedding charter? Cute.

Shout out to OC transpo for having no buses for an hour but a empty double bus driving around saying just married

OC transpo bus showing the message "Just Married" – I have so many questions #ottcity #octranspo

Saw an OC Transpo bus with "Just Married" in the destination sign. Should I be congratulating the driver, or are limos "out" these days?

Thinking of getting married, throwing your next business function or party on a bus?

For a fee, anyone can rent a 40-foot or 60-foot bus, even a double-decker, and display their own sign customized for different events.

“Our buses are equipped to display a large number of pre-written electronic signs that have been developed for different occasions,” Scrimgeour said.

“During off-peak hours, businesses and members of the public can charter buses for conventions, conferences, sightseeing and special events, including weddings.”
