TORONTO — Welcome home, Alfie.

Daniel Alfredsson may have been in the heart of enemy territory in the Battle of Ontario, however, the former Senators’ captain was welcomed with open arms after being sworn in as a Canadian citizen along with his wife Bibbi Backman during a ceremony Tuesday as part of the World Cup of Hockey.

He was introduced as No. 11 Daniel Alfredsson when accepting his certificate.

A senior adviser for Team Sweden during the tournament, Alfredsson, 43, took a break from his duties and when they sang Oh Canada to end the ceremony with the other 101 new ceremonies it took on new meaning.

Alfredsson, who is now a dual citizen of Canada and Sweden, had been thinking about this step for awhile and when offered the opportunity to do it here decided to take it.?

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr were both on hand while former women’s hockey player Cassie Campbell-Pascall was the presiding official.

Alfredsson’s brother Henrik was on hand along with Daniel and Bibbi’s four children.
