Ottawa paramedics are praising the quick actions of two bystanders who helped save the life of a heart attack victim Wednesday.

Paramedics said two customers started performing CPR on a 59-year-old man who collapsed in a store on Clarence Street just before 2:30 p.m.

A bike paramedic responding to the 911 call arrived at the store in less than five minutes and delivered five shocks with an automatic external defibrillator that restarted the man’s heart.

By the time the man reached hospital, he was conscious and speaking to emergency room staff.

Paramedics said they want to thank the two unidentified customers who called 911 and began CPR after determining the man had no vital signs.
