The police presence in Ottawa grew substantially on Saturday when the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Run and the Canadian Police Memorial Ride to Remember finished at Parliament Hill.

The Ride to Remember, which included more than 140 cyclists from across Canada, is held each year to honour peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. It began on Wednesday in Aylmer, Ont., and covered 700 kilometres on the road to the nation’s capital.

The Run to Remember, which began in 2005, is a 460-km relay over three days, beginning at the Ontario Police Memorial site in Toronto and finishing at the National Memorial on the Hill. The main purpose of the run is to raise awareness of the annual Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Service, which is held on the last Sunday of September in Ottawa.

According to the Canadian Police Association website, a parade will begin on Wellington Street at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday and proceed to the Hill, where the 39th annual National Memorial Day service is to begin at 11.

In 1978, the first Memorial honoured 14 officers, the CPA site says. In 2016, the names of more than 850 members are engraved on the Honour Roll along the perimeter wall on Parliament Hill, overlooking the Ottawa River and the Supreme Court of Canada.
