The shipwreck found in the Arctic Ocean more than three weeks ago is indeed HMS Terror, the second of two ships lost in the doomed Franklin Expedition of the 1840s.
Parks Canada confirmed the ship’s identity a little after noon Monday, and plans a conference call with reporters shortly.
A boat from the private Arctic Research Foundation found the wreck Sept. 3. In the following days, the crew inspected the wreck with remote underwater video, and by Sept. 12 word filtered south that they believed it was HMS Terror.
Parks Canada had been nearly silent until now, saying it wanted to collect more information.
Franklin and his two Royal Navy crews all died on the attempt to find the Northwest Passage, beginning in 1845. The ships had been missing for more than a century until the flagship, HMS Erebus, was discovered in 2014.
More to come.
