A 29-year-old man killed by Sûreté du Québec in Montebello Thursday was charging at officers brandishing a knife when he was shot, according to a preliminary investigation from the province’s independent police watchdog.

Officers with the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) arrived at the scene at 215 Rue Saint-François-Xavier at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday to initiate an investigation into the shooting death.

According to initial reports, police were called to the residence to investigate reports of a man threatening suicide.

Police searched the home, and said they followed noises to the attic, where they found the man.

He then charged at officers wielding a knife, according to the initial BEI report.

Officers drew their weapons and fired. The man was listed in critical condition, and later succumbed to his injuries.

Nine investigators with the BEI have been assigned to the case. The arms-length agency investigates all incidents of police shootings in the province.

The BEI said it has also enlisted the support of the Montreal Police Service.

Police have not released the man’s identity.
