Ottawa –Thirteen residents received Fire Commendation Awards today at City Hall, in a ceremony hosted by Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee, and Fire Chief Gerry Pingitore.
The event was part of Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 9 to 15.
“These awards recognize the quick thinking and brave actions of individuals who stepped up when they were needed during an emergency situation,” said Mayor Watson. “Their bravery directly assisted the lives of others and helped the men and women at Ottawa Fire Services do their jobs more effectively.”
Residents were honoured for actions that included:
“All it takes to be a hero is knowing what to do in an emergency, like a fire or a rescue,” said Councillor Deans. “There are simple steps everyone can do to be more prepared and bring out the hero in all of us.”

“Each year, Fire Prevention Week is a paramount event for our service. This year’s theme, Don’t Wait, Check the Date, encourages us to ensure our smoke alarms aren’t out of date and are in full working order,” said Chief Pingitore. “The Commendation Awards remind us of how essential preventing and planning for an emergency really is.”
