Seven people received Fire Chief’s Commendation Awards today at City Hall, in a ceremony hosted by Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee, and Acting Fire Chief Kim Ayotte.

Award recipients honoured today performed a variety of heroic acts within the last year, including:

  • stepping in to help a family member in distress
  • calling 9-1-1 and alerting neighbours after discovering an apartment fire
  • teaching new Canadians how to use a fire extinguisher
  • using a fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire at a neighbour’s house

The event was part of Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 8 to 14.

Quotes:

“Our city is blessed with a rich, empathetic community spirit, and filled with residents who care about each other and are always willing to help others in need. Today’s stories emphasize the goodness in people’s hearts, and their kind and compassionate nature.”

Mayor Jim Watson

“The people we honour today are ordinary people who performed extraordinary actions. I encourage all Ottawa residents to follow the simple steps taken by these heroes to learn what to do in an emergency, if and when the need arises.”

Councillor, Diane Deans, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee

“The theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is, Every Second Counts. Have two ways out. It encourages us all to practice a home fire escape plan and to include, whenever possible, two points of exit.”

Kim Ayotte, Acting Fire Chief, Ottawa Fire Services
