Amina-Sara Belahbib, a 24-year-old woman from Gatineau, is dead after a head-on crash on Highway 50 in western Quebec early Sunday morning, Quebec provincial police have confirmed.
An unidentified young man from Blainville, Que., is expected to be charged at the Gatineau courthouse Monday, Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman Audrey-Anne Bilodeau said. Police say they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The incident occurred at 2:15 a.m. when the 25-year-old man’s car, which was heading east along Highway 50, veered into the westbound lane and crashed into a vehicle with three people in it, according to police.
The young woman, who was sitting in the back of the car heading west, was ejected from the vehicle upon impact, Bilodeau said. She was declared dead at a local hospital.
The driver and the other passenger of the car were transported to hospital after they suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The 25-year-old man who was driving the car that crossed into the oncoming lane, according to police, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Highway 50 was closed for a time as police investigated the crash but reopened to traffic at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
Highway 50 links the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau to Montreal.
