Hate in the Glebe: Swastika and anti-Semitic insult painted on door
"Never had anything like this before.”
An Ottawa woman says she awoke Tuesday to discover a swastika and ethnic slur spray-painted on her front door.
Red spray-paint covered the door’s window, part of a swastika and anti-Semitic insult.
Anna Maranta uses the apartment as the Glebe Minyan, a place where Jews can gather to pray. She uses the title rabbi, although Rabbi Liz Bolton of the Ottawa Reconstructionist Community says Maranta has not been ordained by any recognized rabbinical body. However, Maranta contends there are several types of possible ordination and, in her case, she was ordained in 2010 by an individual rabbi.
Late in the morning Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau confirmed the incident was being investigated and that he stressed on Twitter: “Incidents like this are totally unacceptable and are not tolerated by our community and (Ottawa police).”
Maranta said Tuesday she has suffered “a lot of verbal abuse” in the past, generally related to her work as a social activist, “but I’ve never had anything like this before.”
The door to her Glebe home carries a small sign that says “All are welcome.”
“This is the door to my home, but I’m a rabbi and I also it’s also where I hold my celebratory activities” such as prayer services, Maranta said.
There have been no recent threats or sources of conflict, she said.
“I’ve had nothing, so this is just completely out of the blue.”
There is only one way to respond, she says: “We need to talk and communicate and prepare meals and learn to overcome differences by finding commonalities.”
Maranta is a renter — she has one floor of the house — and has called the landlord, who was quick to repair the damage.
Maranta called several news media early Tuesday and posted a photo and comments on Facebook.
The house has no sign identifying it as belonging to a Jewish organization, but Maranta said she has been there for some 10 years and the location is publicly known. She has never been trouble there before.
By lunchtime, the table had three fresh pots of flowers and fresh baking from well-wishers. Former MP Paul Dewar also dropped in to offer support.
