Ottawa police are warning people to be on the watch for an email scam issuing fake traffic violations for cash in Ottawa and other cities.

The scammers send an email, supposedly from police, telling the recipient they need to pay a fine for a bogus charge. The sample provided by police Thursday shows the scammers seeking an amount of $237.53 for “negligent driving” and provides a phoney reference number and a “statutory” payment deadline.

The scammers advise the recipient to pay immediately, according to police, and direct them to a link online to make the payment, where the victim is then asked to provide personal information.

Ottawa police say they do not issue traffic infraction notices by email, nor do they ask people for an email address during a traffic stop.

Police advised people to read email correspondence carefully, and verify its contents with the proper agency before clicking any links if there are doubts over authenticity.

For more information or to report a scam attempt, police said to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.
