Just in time for the afternoon rush hour, Environment Canada has issued a snow squall warning that may last until early evening.

“Periods of brief but intense snowfall are expected,” the warning says. “Visibilities will be rapidly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow.”

The warning covers a wide swath of areas in the capital region, including Ottawa, Gatineau, Prescott-Russell, Smiths Falls, Perth, Renfrew, Arnprior and Calabogie.

“Near whiteout conditions in snow and blowing snow can be expected, along with local snowfall accumulations of 2 to 4 cm,” it says.

Snow squall warnings are issued when bands of snow form that produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities, Environment Canada says.

Clear skies can change to heavy snow within just a few kilometres. The warning calls on drivers to slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop when visibility is reduced.
