A 24-year-old Kemptville woman who claimed a black sedan struck her infant daughter in her stroller on Clothier Street last week before racing away has been charged with mischief for filing a false report.
Ontario Provincial Police laid the charge Wednesday against Jennifer Lowe after investigators determined there was no collision.
Lowe, who also goes by her married name, Cunning, gave media interviews after the alleged incident and posed for photos with her five-month-old daugher, Millie.
“It was horrifying to see my daughter go flying like that. It was something a mother shouldn’t see,” she told Postmedia. “It went flying into the middle of the road.”
The woman told police she was walking east on Clothier just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, when the car pulled out of a parking lot and struck the stroller. The male driver backed up, drove around the two, and left the scene. Lowe claimed the impact knocked the stroller upside down, but her baby wasn’t injured.
She described the suspect as a white man with scraggly hair who was wearing a Toronto Blue Jays hat.
“I really just hope that they catch this guy,” Lowe said. “I hope and pray that they will find this guy and he goes to jail for what he’s done. You don’t just drive away from an accident. You don’t just flee the scene like this person did.”
Police said at the time that they had asked for surveillance video from surrounding businesses, but would not say Wednesday how they concluded the collision never happened.
“All avenues were explored,” said OPP Const. Cathy Lindsey.
“I’ve been a police officer for 28 years and it’s the first time I’ve seen an incident of this nature,” she said. “It’s fair to say that this is uncommon.”
Lowe is to appear in court in Kemptville on Feb. 1.
