Ottawa residents eager to lace up their skates and hit the Rideau Canal will have to wait a little longer.

The National Capital Commission issued a safety advisory Friday warning people to stay off the Rideau Canal Skateway until the ice thickens.

Despite Friday temperatures dropping to as low as -26 C and -34 with windchill, the NCC says the ice remains dangerously thin and unsafe for skating.

“In order to be deemed fit for use, the ice thickness must measure at least 30 centimetres to accommodate the crowds that use the skateway,” the NCC said in a release.

The current water level beneath the ice varies between one to four metres and requires sustained cold weather to thicken. The skateway generally opens in the first weeks of the New Year.

The NCC insists the presence of work crews does not mean the canal is open for skating and has asked skaters to await further announcement for the official launch of the 47th skating season.

For more information on ice conditions, visit the skateway’s website.
