There’s a snowfall warning in effect for the region, according to an Environment Canada bulletin issued at 4:39 a.m. on Saturday and updated shortly before 11 a.m.
The weather agency expects a significant snowfall beginning on Saturday in the Ottawa area, which means a total of 15 to 20 cm could fall over the next 24 hours or so.
By about 10 a.m., roughly seven cm had fallen in the region.
Temperatures are expected to dip down to a low of -12 C Saturday morning, with the wind making it feel like -18, but will warm up slightly to a low of -8 and wind chill of -13 in the evening.
A mix of snow and ice pellets is expected overnight on Saturday, along with a risk of freezing rain overnight.
The weather agency warns drivers to be careful on snow-covered roads, especially with reduced visibility from all the flakes.
Ottawa police report they were already seeing the effects of the snow, even with reduced traffic flows.
We are starting to get quite a few collision calls. Drive according to road conditions and don't drive if you don't need to. ^JM 871

Outlying areas were also experiencing reduced visibility and slippery roads.
