Side roads in Ottawa remained treacherous Tuesday morning after a Boxing Day of freezing rain. Traffic was light on city roads, though, because so many people are off work for the Christmas holiday. And the worst of it is over.
Just after midnight Monday, Environment Canada removed the freezing-rain warning, marking the end of a miserable Boxing Day.

Over the course of Boxing Day, Ottawa was pelted with 16.4 mm of precipitation, most of it freezing rain. The temperature fluctuated from -12 C at 8 a.m. to 1 degree by 8 p.m. In between, there were ice pellets and about eight hours of freezing rain.
Serious collisions closed down sections of highways in eastern Ontario on Monday. Both Highway 401 westbound and Highway 7 were closed in sections at times, leaving frustrated commuters stuck in back-to-back traffic with delayed or cancelled plans between Ottawa and Toronto.
Highway 401 westbound at Brighton was closed for hours due to numerous collisions, including a tractor trailer that dumped diesel fuel, but reopened shortly before 7 p.m.
Highway 7 was closed in mid-afternoon between Highway 37 and Highway 41, then reopened to traffic shortly after 9 pm. on Monday.
By 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, the temperature had hit 3 degrees. The forecast calls for gusty winds of up to 50 km an hour, with the temperature falling to zero by the afternoon, and a low of -9 overnight Tuesday.
It will get colder Wednesday, with a high of -6, says Environment Canada.
And by Thursday, get ready for a snowstorm. Ottawa could be hit with five to 10 cm of snow, says the Weather Network.
Here’s the Environment Canada Forecast:
Today Mainly cloudy. Wind southwest 30 km/h gusting to 50. Temperature falling to zero this afternoon.
Tonight Mainly cloudy with 60 percent chance of flurries. Wind southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming light late this evening. Low minus 9.
Wed, 28 Dec Clearing in the morning. Increasing cloudiness late in the afternoon. High minus 6.
