It looks like clear sailing this weekend weatherwise — a golden opportunity to spend time outdoors before heading back to school or work.

Environment Canada is predicting a mix of sun and cloud Friday, Saturday and Sunday with highs of -9 C on Friday, -11 C on Saturday and -14 C on Sunday. And while temperatures are predicted to dip to -17 C both Friday and Saturday night.

Sunday’s deep freeze low is expected to dip to -20 C.

It seems like perfect weather for making ice, but the NCC warns that the Rideau Canal remains closed to skaters.

The NCC reports that its skateway team is preparing for its 47th season, but is still warning skaters to stay off the canal.

The canal usually opens to skaters in the first weeks of January, but ice thickness must measure at least 30 cm to accommodate the weight of the public on the ice, says the NCC.

The agency also has to evaluate the quality of the ice surface, which can deteriorate with warm weather and freezing rain.

Meanwhile, back to school and work on Monday may mean heading out into snow flurries, with possible periods of freezing rain on Tuesday night.
