Charges are pending in a bumper car-style crash sparked by a Saab making a U-turn on Highway 34 south of Vankleek Hill early Friday evening.

The crash involved five vehicles and three pedestrians, and shut down the highway for hours, leaving one person in hospital.

Hawkesbury OPP reported the black Saab was heading north when its driver made the turn, colliding with a southbound Mercedes.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries but the black Saab was disabled in the southbound lane.

After everyone got out of their vehicles and passing motorists and nearby residents stopped to help, a southbound white Freightliner truck hit the Saab, pushing it onto the shoulder.

The Saab then hit the pedestrians and a passing motorist’s parked vehicle. The Freightliner kept going, hitting a resident’s parked car before rolling onto its side into the ditch.

Three drivers and three pedestrians were taken to hospital. Five were released but one stayed in the hospital with more serious injuries.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Saab, a 57-year-old Quebec woman.
