The stepmother of an Ottawa boy who was shackled, tortured and starved in his family’s Kanata basement for months was sentenced Wednesday to three years in jail.

The 38-year-old woman and her husband, a former counter-terrorism officer with the RCMP, were both found guilty last November in what a judge called a “gut-wrenching” case of child abuse of an 11-year-old boy.

The Mountie’s wife, a senior executive with the federal public service, was found guilty of assault with a weapon – a wooden spoon – and failing to provide the necessities of life.

She will be credited for time served in jail, and will spend 17 months behind bars.

At the couple’s 2016 trial, court heard she not only knew of the abuse going on in the basement of their home where the boy was shackled to a pole and forced to use a slop bucket as a toilet, but she was also on maternity leave while he was down there.

The emaciated boy escaped after spending six months locked up in the basement and was found by a neighbour while he wandered in the snow in search of water. He weighed only 50 pounds.

His stepmother expressed remorse for failing the boy early on, court heard, and at a sentencing hearing last month she said in a prepared statement she hopes, “one day he will find it in his heart to forgive me.”

“There is not one day that goes by that I don’t think of the loneliness, the fear, the pain and the betrayal that he must have felt. I’m deeply sorry,” she told the court from the prisoner’s box.

The stepmother’s defence lawyer, Anne London-Weinstein, had asked the judge to sentence the woman to time already served in jail, while the prosecution had requested a five-year prison term.

The names of the stepmom and her husband are shielded by a publication ban in order to protect the identity of the boy, who is now 14.

The boy’s father, who was found guilty of assault, sexual assault, forcible confinement and failing to provide the necessities of life, will be sentenced at a later date.

More to come.
