Staff, students, family and friends are mourning the death of an eight-year-old Grade 3 pupil at Orléans Wood Elementary School on Friday.

In a letter home to parents on Friday, school acting principal Cathie Whyte said there had been “a medical emergency,” that 911 had been called and that pupil Griffin Martin had died in hospital.

“On behalf of the entire Orléans Wood Elementary School community, I have offered our deepest condolences to the Martin family and reassured them of our support,” Whyte wrote.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for all of us, as we struggle to make sense of this tragedy.”

No details about the cause of death have been released.

“We’re not really sure what happened,” said Zone 8 Trustee Keith Penny. “It’s still under investigation.”

Orléans Wood is a school of about 150 children from senior kindergarten to Grade 3. The oldest child in the school is nine.

The Ottawa Carleton District School Board dispatched its tragic event response team to the school Friday and counsellors will be back there on Monday, Penny said.

The school’s Facebook page was awash with messages of sympathy Saturday.

“The school community is very tight-knit. They’ve taken this very hard,” Penny said.

“For someone so young, it’s just extremely tragic. All of us are taking it very, very hard.”
