Hang onto your toque.
Ottawa awoke to gusty and frigid Wednesday morning with a windchill of -27 triggering a frostbite advisory from Ottawa Public Health. At 7 a.m., the mercury sat at -15 C but northwest winds whipped at 30 km/h gusting to 60. They’re not expected to become light until Wednesday evening.
“Watch out for flying cats, cars, semis, people, etc.,” a local Twitter traffic watcher advised.
Wednesday’s high is a forecast -6 C with sunshine and a UV index of 4 or moderate.
Overnight, Environment Canada is predicting clear skies and a low of -15 C.
Rush-hour traffic seemed to be coping well, at least in the early going, after Tuesday’s congestion caused by a one-day walkout by unionized drivers and mechanics with the Outaouais trans commission.
For Thursday, expect sun giving way to a mix of sun and cloud in late afternoon, a high of 5 C and low of -5 C, which is precisely the normal temperature for this week in March, according to Environment Canada.
Friday features clouds, a 60 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers both day and night, high of 2 C and low of -3 C.
More clouds are forecast for Saturday with a 40-per-cent chance of flurries and high of 1 C.
There’s a 60-per-cent chance of snow for both Saturday night, when the low will dip to -8 C, and Sunday, with a high of 4 C.
For Monday, the forecast is for sunshine and 4 C.
