A federal government building was on lockdown for several hours Tuesday after workers opened a letter containing a suspicious white powder, according to Gatineau police.
Police were called to 70 rue Cremazie in Gatineau around 3 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a suspicious package.
Lt. Paul Lafontaine said about 1,500 workers were inside the building, which houses several federal government departments, at the time of the lockdown.
The building was evacuated, but police said as of 8 p.m., about 40 people were still confined to one floor of the building for precautionary reasons.
Police said the suspicious package was delivered to a Citizenship and Immigration office, and said paramedics were monitoring anyone who came into contact with the package.
No injuries were reported, and police said no one has shown any symptoms or sickness.
Sûreté du Québec officers were called in to assist in the investigation.
Gatineau police said they expected to provide an update Wednesday morning.
