MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Ottawa Senators took a pause from the playoff chase Wednesday to brighten Jonathan Pitre’s day.
And the timing of their visit with Pitre and his mother, Tina Boileau, couldn’t have been more perfect.
With 16-year-old Pitre preparing to go back into the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital Friday for a second attempt at a stem-cell transplant after the first one was unsuccessful in September, the Senators stopped by his Minnesota apartment immediately after landing here.
The Senators play the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night in nearby St. Paul.
Pitre had a chance to smile as the whole team dropped by to give him best wishes as he prepares to go back into the hospital for what will be a difficult round of chemotherapy and radiation to prepare for the transplant.
His mom was expecting company, but Pitre had no idea the Senators were on their way until the door opened and in walked Erik Karlsson and company.
Pitre, who’s battling a rare form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a blistering skin disease, had a wide smile when the players presented him with a flag they had all signed.
Jonathan Pitre's mother knew the entire team was coming to see him but he didn't know until Karlsson and the boys walked through the door.

“It means a whole lot,” he said. “We’re going into transplant in two days now. It just gave me a big confidence boost and a bunch of other boosts I can’t describe.”
Boileau was thrilled that captain Karlsson and alternate captain Kyle Turris were accompanied by all their teammates.
“This is exactly what Jonathan needed to give him a bit of a lift,” said Boileau, who will attend Thursday’s game with Jonathan.

?The Senators have been longtime supporters of the Pitre family, who make their home in Russell. Touched by the story of his fight with EB, former Senators GM Bryan Murray signed Pitre to a one-day contract to be a scout for the team.
Since that time, the organization has had a close association with Pitre.
He’s not only been to several games in Ottawa, he was also a presenter at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas in 2015. Wearing a suit given to him by Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, Pitre was invited to attend the 2016 NHL All-Star Game in Nashville.
