In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

Charles Melville Hays was an American who came to Canada in the early 1900s with a vision of building a transcontinental railway, complete with a few deluxe hotels in major cities along the way. For Ottawa, he hired Montreal designers to take over the planning of the elegant Château Laurier, which was finished in 1912. However, Hays never saw his dream completed — he died in the sinking of the Titanic just days before the Château was scheduled to open.
