If you live anywhere in Ontario east of London, you’ll be wanted to wear your wellies and carry an umbrella on Thursday. And in some areas, a snow shovel might prove handy.
Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning, with a forecast of 30 to 50 millimetres of rain expected overnight Wednesday night and through to Thursday night. And for your added misery, there could be a little snow tossed into the mix on Thursday night.
In the Algonquin Park area west of Barry’s Bay, snowfall Thursday and Thursday night could amount to 15 to 25 centimetres, driven by gusty north winds, the weather agency said.
This latest early spring treat was not expected to end until late Friday.
Because the ground is still frozen in many places and saturated in others, rainwater and melting snow will run off quickly into ditches, streams, rivers and ponds, Environment Canada said.
Its warning comes with advisories to avoid low-lying areas and to keep children and pets away from ditches, culverts and waterways. Homeowners should ensure sump pumps are working.
Motorists should not drive through standing water in case the road beneath it is washed out. People in low-lying areas along the Rideau River between Kemptville and Kars were advised by Rideau Valley Conservation of a risk of flooding.
