Flood levels have stabilized in hard-hit Gatineau Thursday, but officials say they are maintaining a close watch as melting snow and forecasted rain could lead to higher water.
“No residents have been evacuated (from their homes), but we are getting ready for the worst,” says Jean Boileau, director of the communications for the City of Gatineau.
There are now more than 30 residences affected by the floods in Gatineau, as water fill up more streets.
Residents in hard-hit areas described the situation as the worst flooding in more than 20 years.
The level of the water in the Ottawa River has been stable most of the morning, but melting snow could bring an increase later today.
“We are expecting a rise of 15 to 30 cm,” says Boileau.
The city has added two new locations where residents can collect sandbags to block off the rising water, including one on Cartier Street, a newly affected road on the Gatineau River.
“We have about 12,000 bags of sand in preparation right now and there are eight locations available where residents can get bags,” Boileau said.
The city will hold a news conference for further details at 3 p.m. and residents seeking more information can visit the city’s website.
