An apartment building in the Hull section of Gatineau was evacuated Monday night after reports of people feeling sick and smelling an as-yet unidentified substance.
Firefighters were called just before 8:30 p.m. and helped 27 residents out of the building at 24 Rue Arthur Buies.
The Red Cross took them to a hotel, where they spent the night while firefighters worked to identify the substance, which may have been released during renovations to one of the units.
The substance was decsribed as having an effect similar to cayenne pepper.
