The City’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee today received the 2016 Annual Report for the Ottawa Rural Clean Water Program, which provides grants to farmers and other rural property owners for projects that protect Ottawa’s streams, rivers, wetlands and groundwater.

Of the 74 projects approved in 2016, 43 were completed in 2016. The remaining 31 will be completed in 2017. The City provided a total of $149,435 in grants for a variety of projects, the most popular being the decommissioning of wells and the development of forest management plans. Other projects involved manure storage, erosion control, cover crops, and repair of septic systems close to watercourses.

The Committee also approved a commemorative naming proposal to name a ball diamond at Kenmore Bicentennial Park, “Ronald Warren Ball Diamond.” Ronald Warren was known for his extensive community service and involvement at every stage in helping transform this park from an open field to a much-needed community softball facility.

The Committee also agreed with a City staff report that a significant parcel of land just south of the urban boundary in Orléans should remain as an Agriculture Resource Area. The applicant had requested the land be re-designated as General Rural area.

The decision means the 245 hectares of land, located south of the communities of Summerside and Avalon and north of Wall Road, between Tenth Line Road and Trim Road, will continue to be protected for agricultural use.

Reports for all Committee-approved items will go to City Council on Wednesday, May 10.
