Ottawa police are investigating after a man allegedly grabbed a female student during a school event in Barrhaven.

According to police, the man was walking along a park pathway last Thursday at about 10:40 a.m. near a schoolyard along Kennevale Drive with what appeared to be a golden retriever. The man approached a girl who was playing in the schoolyard and asked her if the dog belonged to her. She replied it wasn’t and fled. The man then left.

A short time later, the man with the dog returned and approached a second student, police said.

He asked the second girl if the dog belonged to her and when she said no, he grabbed her by the wrist and tried to drag her away. She managed to break free and ran to a teacher to report the assault.

Police are looking for a Caucasian man who stands five feet 10 inches (178 cm) tall with a medium build and short blond hair. He’s believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s. He was wearing one-piece black coveralls and a black vest with reflective “X” on it, similar to construction workers’ gear. He was also wearing a dark ‘Bass Pro Shop’ baseball hat and sunglasses.

Anyone with information is asked to call 613-236-1222, ext. 5944. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
