The late Mauril Bélanger was a big supporter of the Canada Space and Aviation Museum, and starting Monday, his memory will live on at its theatre.
The museum announced it will be renaming its theatre to the “Mauril Bélanger Theatre” in recognition of the former MP, who passed away last year at 61 from Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS.
“I am grateful to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum for recognizing Mauril’s contribution to the Museum,” said Catherine Bélanger, Mauril’s wife, in a statement Monday.
“He has been one of the Museum’s biggest fans and an ardent supporter of its staff, vision, and raison d’être.”
Mauril Bélanger played a key role in helping the museum attain funding to build its reserve hangar, said a press release.
This is the second public recognition for Bélanger in recent weeks. On May 18, École élémentaire publique Le Trillium renamed its school l’École élémentaire publique Mauril Bélanger in his honour. Bélanger held the Ottawa-Vanier riding for 21 years and was known for his advocacy for the rights of French-Canadians and his work with immigrants.
“The plaque we are unveiling, and the renaming of this theatre, will be tangible and lasting affirmations of Mauril’s efforts and successes in his role as a staunch supporter of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, for the benefit of all Canadians,” said Fernand Proulx, interim president and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation.
