The City of Ottawa announced that the François Dupuis Recreation Centre has been inducted into the Rick Hansen Foundation’s Accessible Cities Award Circle of Excellence during today’s celebrations for AccessAbility Day.

The recognition from the Rick Hansen Foundation praised the Centre’s accessibility for all users, including those with mobility, vision and hearing disabilities. Founded in 1988, the Rick Hansen Foundation’s mission is to remove barriers in the built environment and liberate the potential of people living with disabilities.

The City's AccessAbility Day celebrations focused on employment and were co-sponsored by the United Way's Employment Accessibility Resource Network (EARN). The City officially presented EARN with a proclamation declaring June 1, 2017 AccessAbility Day in Ottawa. The day featured presentations from David McGuinty, Member of Parliament for Ottawa South; Rich Donovan, CEO of the Return on Disability Group; and Anna-Karina Tabuñar, who screened her film Talent Untapped.

Quotes

“The François Dupuis Recreation Centre was designed to be accessible to every Ottawa resident, including those with mobility, vision and hearing disabilities. This recognition not only reaffirms the City’s commitment to building an inclusive and accessible City for all but shows that we are making real progress towards those goals.”

Jim Watson, Mayor, City of Ottawa

“The City is always striving to make accessibility an ‘every day’ part of how we do business. We have made significant efforts over the past several years to remove physical barriers and make all our facilities more accessible. These improvements provide for better access to City services for everyone and make the City an attractive employer for people with disabilities.”

Steve Kanellakos, City Manager
