In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

The lodge at Camp Fortune in Chelsea, Que., began as an abandoned woodcutter’s shack with a sign that said, “Trespassers will be Persecuted.” In 1920, the Ottawa Ski Club bought it, installed a stove, table and benches and changed the sign to “Members only.” Those members went on to create a trail network through Gatineau Park that now draws thousands of visitors each year.
