In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Ottawa was ranked one of the world’s cleanest cities by Forbes in 2007. The capital city came fourth behind Calgary, Honolulu and Helsinki. To measure “cleanliness,” Forbes considered how a city regulates its energy sectors, waste management systems and transportation infrastructure (roads, rail, air and subways). All taken together, it’s a “formidable” challenge for a city to be clean and stay that way.
